An educational facility in Second Life can be all of these things:

• distance-learning campus;
• conference center;
• museum;
• web browser;
• database retrieval system;
• language-learning facility;
• programming environment;
• construction facility;
• displayer of powerpoint presentations;
• slide projector;
• RSS-feed receiver;
• machinima production studio;
• movie theater;
• instant messaging and peer-to-peer text communicator;
• VOIP-enabled international voice communication system;
• a streaming audio and video player.

library and a virtual sandbox
Science Lab
Student lab or studio
Reception area for display of student work
Library interface
Holodeck room also comes to mind as well as a connection to several learning management systems including Moodle
SL is a simulator for inspiring the imagination, for emergence and creating what we cannot replicate in RL.
community building / socialization space? Visualization /
modelling tool

I would say focus on:
#1. functions SL fills that are unique and not reproduced by other common tools;
#2. functions that SL can fill at lower cost that common tools.

• distance-learning campus;
ACTIVITIES
• conference center / meeting space / office hours;
• language-learning facility;
• programming environment;
RESOURCES
• museum;
• library;
• student lab;
• displays of student work;
• construction facility (sandbox);
INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
• database retrieval system;
• displayer of powerpoint presentations / slide projector;
• RSS-feed receiver;
MULTIMEDIA
• machinima production studio;
• movie theater;
• instant messaging and peer-to-peer text communicator;
• VOIP-enabled international voice communication system;
• a streaming audio and video player.

Chris Smith's (SL Shamblesguru Voom) International Schools Island (ISI) is a wonderful place and just stocked full of resources. Not only that, it's a fun place to visit and explore. If you get a chance head over and take his pedal ballon tour (with text narration that gives you an idea of Chris' great sense of humor Smile ). Next I recommend you spend some time looking over the many resources available in his Information Towers. You can stock up on lots of freebies while there. The holodeck on his land is another favorite of mine. I know many of the old timers are aware and have already visited this place, but it's growing at a rapid rate so if you haven't been there in a while I recommend you revisit.

UniSchool Ali Baba I Empty [SLED] Ready to Teach in SL? A Quiz!‏

Post  Gambino Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:23 pm

I've been thinking about creating a quick "self-assessment" quiz to help our faculty determine if they're ready to bring students in world, so your post prompted me to take a stab at it: http://www.quibblo.com/quiz/7--PShe/Are-you-ready-to-teach-in-Second-Life This is a first draft, so feedback would be appreciated! It's not meant to be an exhaustive test of competency, of course, but more in the spirit of those "personality tests" that give you a sense of where you fall on a spectrum. I'm a big fan of the Global Kids Second Life Curriculum (with thanks to Jeremy Kemp for hosting it on Simteach.com!) and I used that as a guide to make the quiz. It's a good place to start for faculty who want to increase their own skill level or plan exercises for students: http://simteach.com/wiki/index.php?title=GKCx/Table_of_Contents Let me know what you think of the quiz - I'm sure it could be improved, I'm not all the way awake yet. =) All the best, - Chris/Fleep

That's awesome !

I just set a "tutorial" in a public part of the forum, I made one picture but i'm really tired... hihi..

Also, i'm gonna make a notecard with explaination of all our tools (many good ones are comming).

Oh, I guess teachers or even students will be interessed until the begin to look better, so i'm making this :

UniSchool Ali Baba I Freephoto

Lots of VERYYY nice stuffs, i'm waiting for more tomorow, i already took contact with freebie reselers to have more transfer clothes. The hairs are georgous ( try them vivienne hihihi ). There will also be a notecard in the big screen with " how to change clothes ".

That little hand you see on the box is a gesture for lessons. If you take it and write " /hand " your hand is moving in the air and in chatbox you can read " AV Name : Hand! " so that teachers knows you have a question whitout disturbing him. I set a notecard inside to explain how to use it... but in french... if someone wants to translate it or simply make one in english, that will be nice Smile

Orage is decorating all around the "auditorium" with rivers and stuff like that (also nice).

Oh yes, mooooost important for teachers and for students is to have it easy with camera view (alt & mouse..). I already thought to set boxes in front of black boards with all the documents teachers want to share so that students can look them at texture size ( you see when you click on a texture inside your inventorry, a windows open and you can see it clearly, well like this. )

Oh vivienne, can u explain me how to make conference ? :s

Ok ... * think * ... i think it's all for the moment xD

If u have some full perm stuff, send it Very Happy

PIVOTE (which came out of the UK JISC PREVIEW project and involved Coventry University, St George's Hospital University of London, Kingston University and Daden Limited) officially goes into open source today. With PIVOTE you can author a learning exercise using a forms based application on the web, and then play it in Second Life, or on the web, or even on a mobile. Over time we hope the community will build interfaces to other virtual worlds like Open Sim, Wonderland etc.

PIVOTE offers 5 key features:
- tutors can concentrate on content and structure, not SL notecards and LSL, or the vargaries of other virtual world technologies
- the same learning content and structure can be delivered to multiple virtual worlds and other platforms - protecting investment and supporting student (and tutor) access from anywhere
- virtual world objects can be easily shared between exercises and organisations
- the same content can be explored using different structrures - allowing tutors to rapidly create variations on scenarios, and tune scenarios to the needs of beginners and experts, and to teaching or assessment.
- all student data is captured ready for import into VLEs

The PIVOTE web site (not quite finished - but will be by the end of the day!) is at http://www.pivote.info and includes introductory documents and presentations (and shortly videos). The Google Code site (which also has the documentation) is at http://code.google.com/p/pivote/.

The PIVOTE center in SL is at http://slurl.com/secondlife/St%20Georges%20University/123/16/21, and you can pick up the PIVOTE SL Controller and sample objects from there (you need the Controller to work with the server code). Staff from St George's and Daden will be at the centre from 11am to 6pm today (UK time) if you want to drop by for a chat and a demo. Just email us (info@pivote.info) if you'd like to arrange a demo at another time.

PIVOTE is free to download and run on your own server, and Daden (and hopefully others) will be offering hosted versions of PIVOTE (and other PIVOTE support services) for those who don't want to install and run the system themelves.

Any questions just email me or IM me in-world.

The School Store at the Literature Alive! parcel has all free items for teachers and students. There are lucky chairs there to win free things, dumpsters for dumpster diving, and games like monopoly and air hockey. There are also teaching kits for literature related lessons. Everything is offered to the public for free.

Lots of educational spaces to visit by broad disciplinary areas (4-pages with with descriptions and LMs) on Jo and Sean's wiki http://sleducation.wikispaces.com/educationaluses As well as Beth's school store, I'd also give a shout out to Chris's IS Island. http://slurl.com/secondlife/International%20Schools/65/94/24

I would also check out the ICT Library created by Milosun Czervik (SL), which has a huge cache of free educator resources.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions! I think I’ve got a good, medium-sized collection of landmarks to help new faculty find some starting points without overwhelming them with too much to do.

Several folks asked if I would post the final list to the listerv, but I think it’s probably better to post the SLURL, so you can pickup the notecards. Please pardon our mess, as we’re doing a bit of remodeling!

UniSchool Ali Baba I Empty slide presenter in SL

Post  Gambino Mon Apr 13, 2009 6:56 pm

There are many slide presenters in Second Life to choose. And I think it could be a good idea to start a debate about them. This will help us in choosing one that fits our needs, and will help developers to improve them Mine is Doctorpartridge slide presenter that can be found here

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Adobe/122/153/37

Why?
1. It faces the lag problem that many slide presenters have. It loads in advance 5 slides that are being charged in the user cache, so changes between slides are very rapid. There are however some other slide presenters that have this feature as well
2. There is a full perm option that allows you to make changes in code. The regular versions are modify so you can change the aspect ratio of the screen (i like to use 16:9 slides)
3. It is very easy to use
4. It has a permission feature that allow other users to use the slider or not
5. Use quite a few prims
6. Nice and simply design
7. It comes with instructions

_____

I'm fond of the "Presentation Screen v7.0" created originally by TroyMcLuhan and modified by myself. It's completely open source and full perms.
You can modify and hack thecode to your heart's contente. It's controllable via text commands starting with "/1", or with a HUD. Change a list at the beginning of the script to adjust who can control the slides.
You can, for instance, change the name of "PresentationScreen Controls" (the HUD) to something else, and put that differentname in the access list for the slide screen. It's got a built-in laser pointer.
It uses two prims (one for the screen, one for the laser pointer).
By default, it preloads the next three and previous two slides. (Thisis, in case you're like me, you sometimes go back and forth a bit.)
You can configure it in the code to preload the next five if you prefer that. Instructions are included. It's completely free... you can get it here:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/NineInchNerds/102/228/22 It's close to the middle of the wall that says "Free Stuff".

Here's a likely less-laggy place to get it: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Longfellow/116/152/22

Use the teleporter to your right to get to "Prospero's Free Stuff".

_____

Eloise Paster has created a very clever little presenter that is ideal for tutorials. It will read text into chat as it shows images, which means that you don't have to worry so much about squeezing text onto the slides. It also means that people with rezzing problems don't have to wait for the text. I think too much text on a slide is a pain, anyway. The slides change without much lag. Eloise has coded it so that you can set it up to play by itself, or you can set it so that the student clicks to forward it. The presenter is called the Autoplay, and its available at her store, and I think, at the LIterature Alive store. Eloise is inventive, and always open to new ideas. Thanks El! I'm also trying out the Sloodle presenter, tied to a Moodle website. I use this to broadcast my presentation to the class as they work in groups. It's pretty easy to set up, and the Sloodle guys keep inventing new improvements on it. Bravo Jeremy, Daniel and Edgar! Eventually, I'd like to start each class with a short slideshow sent out to all my working groups, and tied to a voice presentation on a streaming server. I haven't quite succeeded in this yet. But soon. Here's what it can do: (1) show slides from flickr, just load the URL into the Moodle site. Also shows web content (static), and video. (Although not all video - you can't just connect it to YouTube) (2) with the next update, I'll be able to use it to show a .pdf file, pictures included. I can't wait! (3) rezzes quickly, neat presentation (4) only one presenter per plot of land, but you can set up several presenters for groups and control them from a central location. (5) Can be set public, private or group (6) you can also use a smaller presenter as a controller, really handy if you're standing in front of a class and don't want to look around

I can't help but chime in to the discussion about favorite slide projectorssince I just happen to have designed the coolest slide projector in all ofSL: the SinclairLewis Slide Projector. Each of these projectors is made withonly the finest electrons --hand picked by Juan Valdez-- to ensure years oftrouble-free operation. It looks and sounds like the slide projectors of our youth, for those of uswho are old enough to remember. It allows you to advance slides manually orplay them in auto-show mode. It automatically aligns itself with theoperating avatar. But the feature I like best is the ability to change slidetrays quickly (right before your eyes), so you can switch betweenpre-constructed slide shows easily. As an extra added bonus, if you orderbefore midnight, it comes in a box that gift wraps itself and says nicethings about you and the recipient when it unwraps. If you'd like to take a look at it in-world, go here:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Descanso/95/68/24

You can order it on XStreetsSL here:

https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1253945

-- or just search for "slide projector" in the Marketplace section on theirweb site. Or just enjoy reading the beautifully illustrated instruction book (I spentWaayyy too much time on this):

http://www.freewebs.com/sinclairlewish/ProjectorInstructions.pdf

We now return you to our regularly scheduled list serve.

If you want a copy - or want to see the tutorial where I explain how its made, or want the source- they are all 'free as always' and available in the big brown theater on Adobe eLearning Island. They're in the back of the ampitheater - a rack of orange signs.

______________

Whilst I've enjoyed reading this thread, I think one of the things it really highlights is the fun of making tools in Second Life, and perhaps some of the fun of slide presenters too! I make I think 5 different slide presenters, with various other features added to some. I have ideas for at least two new ones too. Why the massive variety? Basically people want different things from their slide presenter. Some want stand-alone, some want rigid control, some want flexibility. Everyone pretty much wants to be able to move back and forth, but some want to skip to the beginning and the end on occasion. Some want bookmarks, the ability to controllable stream video through their slide screen, the ability to open a web-page and so on. Coding in SL doesn't really let you build an all-singing all dancing do it all projector with all the features of Powerpoint, at least not in a reasonable fashion because of script memory limits and the like - although it can pull down whatever subset you really want, but they vary from person to person, always fun. Just to add to the fun, I'm off the opinion that we should use slide projectors or the equivalent as little as possible. I'm not saying they're without use, but they're often a lazy fall-back. And for the really fun bit: I recently gave a talk in SL at a conference. Well, a text presentation. The "slide projector" I used? None of them actually, although I had slides. I had 6 slides, made a big cube, floated it over my head and rotated it at appropriate times during the presentation. Texture-rezzing issues? none. Chance of people in the audience playing with the slides and advancing them early? Small (there could have been someone there with mod rights to my objects, but I don't have many people that can do that). Downsides? For me none. I was making a number of visual supports for statements and providing my email address for people that wanted to follow up contacts. If people panned around and read the slides first, so what? The content was certainly not me reading from the slides, there weren't quizzes and answers, and having a broad outline of the structure in advance could be called "telling them what you're going to tell them" first. I'm (hopefully unsurprisingly) quite confident about my ability to rotate a cube at speed. There was a pause in the typing no doubt, but those of you that remember the "next slide please" days, or are used to ppt with fancy transitions, would see longer gaps than I think I had at the time. Oh, and if anyone wants to commission a slide projector with some simple transitions, they're certainly doable too. Cross-fades, horizontal and vertical sliding are easy enough, block highlighting live is doable (although not following a sentence because SL doesn't know where the punctuation is on the texture). You really can pick your subset of features, although you might pay in prims of course.
