Section 1: INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Second Life! Second Life can be confusing and frustrating. One reason for this is that the Second Life client is designed for two main purposes.

1) As an interface with a 3D world allowing you to move about and interact with other residents.
2) It is also a 3D Editor allowing you to create anything that you can imagine.

Second Life offers a very powerful set of tools used to create the world that you see around you. Many residents use Second Life for social purposes as well. You are free to follow your interests.

Below are some frequently asked questions that can help new residents as well as old. We hope that you find it helpful.

Section 2: INVENTORY

Q: How do I access my inventory?
A: Click the "Inventory" button on the toolbar. If you do not see your toolbar, click View > Toolbar on the menubar at the top of your screen.

Q: How do I read a notecard?
A: Notecards are stored in the folder called "Notecards". Double click the notecard to read it.

Q: How do I create a landmark so I can return to a place that I have been before?
A: Click World in the menu bar and select "Create Landmark Here".
Note: Some land owners do not allow this.

Q: How do I teleport using a landmark?
A: Landmarks are stored in a folder called "Landmarks". Double click one and select Teleport.

Q: How do I search for things in my inventory?
A: Enter the name of the item in the text field at the top of your inventory window.
Note: You must clear the text field to see your entire inventory again.

Q: How do I see only the most recent items in my inventory?
A: Select the "Recent Items" tab in your inventory window.

Q: How do I give an item to someone?
Option 1: Drag the item from your inventory onto the resident you want to send it to.
Option 2: Search for the resident and drag the item into their profile.

Q: How do I open a Box or Package?
A: Step 1: Open your inventory.
Step 2: A box or package is considered an "object" and should be inside your Objects folder.
Step 3: Drag and Drop the box into the world on land that allows you to build.
Step 4: Right click on the box and select Open.
Step 5: Select "Copy To Inventory" to copy the contents into your inventory.
Note 1: A folder with the name of the box will be created and the contents copied into it.
Note 2: Items that can't be copied will be moved from the box into your inventory.

Q: How do I make money?
A: Option 1: Deposit money using your credit card. 1 USD = Appox. 280 Linden Dollars.
Option 2: Visit www.earn2life.com to learn about their excellent money making programs.
Option 3: Search for a job, there are many existing business owners that need reliable help.
Option 4: Create something worth buying and sell it. Sandboxes are a great place to build.

Q: How to I take off my clothing?
A: Step 1: Make sure you are in a private location like your house or a dressing room.
Step 2: Right click on your body and select "Take Off".
Step 3: Select "Clothes".
Step 4: Select "More".
Step 5: Select "All Clothes".

Q: How do I detach everything from my body?
A: Step 1: Make sure you are in a private location like your house or a dressing room.
Step 2: Right click on your body and select "Take Off".
Step 3: Select "Detach All".

Q: How do I wear clothing?
A: Step 1: Open your Inventory.
Step 2: Locate the item of clothing you want to wear.
Step 3: Right click the item to bring up a menu of choices.
Step 4: Select Wear.
Note: Some items of clothing are considered Objects like Shoes, Hats, and Belts.

Q: How do I change my skin?
A: It's the same procedure as wearing clothing.

Q: How do I attach something to my body?
A: Step 1: Open your Inventory.
Step 2: Locate the object you want to attach.
Step 3: Right click the item to bring up a menu of choices.
Step 4: Select Wear.

Q: How do I wear Hair made of primitives? (3D Hair)
A: It's the same procedure as attaching an object.

Q: How do I "wear" and "attach" everything inside a Folder?
A: Right Click on a Folder and select either "Add to Outfit" or "Replace Outfit".
Note 1: Add will wear or attach the items to your avatar.
Note 2: Replace will remove all clothing and attachments, prior to wearing or attaching items.

Q: How do I adjust the position of an attachment?
A: Step 1: Stand on a basic pose stand. Get one for free at Amity Island Freebies, Mens, Tools box.
Step 2: Right click on the attached item and select Edit.
Step 3: Drag the Red, Green, and Blue handles to adjust the position.
Step 4: Close the Edit window when you are finished.

Q: How do I adjust the size of an attachment?
A: Step 1: Stand on a basic pose stand. Get one for free at Amity Island Freebies, Mens, Tools box.
Step 2: Right click on the attached item and select Edit.
Step 3: Press and Hold the CTRL and the SHIFT keys on your keyboard. COMMAND and SHIFT on Mac.
Step 4: You should see little gray boxes surrounding the item. If not, the item may not be MODIFY.
Note 1: You can see if the item is MODIFY in the General tab of the editor window.
Step 5: While holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys, click and drag one of the gray boxes.
Step 6: Release all of the keys and your mouse button when the size is correct.
Note 2: The position of the item will need to be adjusted when you change the size of an item.

Q: Where can I find classes to learn about building, scripting, making clothes, and much more?
A: New Citizens Incorporated has classes every day of the week. Visit their website at nci-sl.org.

Section 4: PROFILES

Q: How can I tell others about my interests, skills, and favorite places?
A: Fill out your profile. To access it, select Edit on the menu bar and select Profile.

Q: How do I access the profile of another resident?
A: Step 1: Click Search.
Step 2: Select the People tab.
Step 3: Enter your friends' name.
Step 4: Click Search in the search window.
Step 5: Select the name of the resident in the left column. Their profile appears on the right.

Q: What else can I do with profiles?
A: 1) Find them on the map if they are a friend.
2) Offer a Teleport to your current location.
3) Add them as a friend.
4) Pay them in Linden Dollars.
5) Send them an Instant Message.
6) Mute them so they can't be heard by you.

Q: How do I stay in touch with my friends?
A: Option 1: Right click on your friends' avatar and select "Add Friend".
Option 2: Search for your friend and click "Add Friend" in their profile.
Note: Adding someone that you don't know is highly discouraged.

Q: How do I access my friends list?
A: Click "Communicate" in the toolbar and select the Friends tab.

Q: How do I find Groups of people that have similar interests to mine?
A: Step 1: Click Search.
Step 2: Select the Groups tab.
Step 3: Enter a good keywords for your interest like "racing".
Step 4: Click Search in the search window.
Note: Make sure to read the Group Charter before joining a group.

Q: How do I access my groups list?
A: Click "Communicate" in the toolbar and select the Groups tab.

Q: How do I find interesting Points of Interest in Second Life?
A: Option 1: Click Search and enter a keyword of interest to you.
Option 2: Check out the Top Places at www.b-places.com.

Q: How do I find a house, property, or commercial space to rent?
A: Step 1: Click Search on your toolbar.
Step 2: In the Search field type "Rental".
Step 3: Click Search in the search window.

Q: How do I find a product?
A: Click Search and enter a product keyword like "cars".

Q: How can I improve the performance of Second Life?
A: Option 1: Close out all applications and games other than Second Life.
Option 2: Clear your cache. Edit > Preferences > Network Tab > Clear Cache.
Option 3: Stay away from overly crowded areas, residents = lag.
Option 4: Stay away from prim heavy areas, objects = lag.
Option 5: Get a broadband connection. Fast DSL, Cable, Fiber, etc.
Option 6: Upgrade your graphics card to a proper gaming GPU.
Option 7: Add more RAM memory to your computer. 2GB or more.

Q: How do I know how much lag I am causing?
A: Step 1: Enable the Advanced Menu by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ALT-D. COMMAND-SHIFT-ALT-D on Mac.
Step 2: On the menu bar, click Advanced > Rendering > Info Displays > Avatar Rendering Cost.
Step 3: You should see a number above your head as well as other residents heads.
Note: 1 - 1000 is low, 1000 - 5000 is medium, 5000 and above is high. Try for 1000 and below.
